The perfect way to enter the park is through its original gates, because you get a real sense of the transition from city to nature. You pass under the shadow of the iconic Rijksmuseum and find yourself immersed in the greenery and quiet of this spectacular park.

Picasso Statue

Picasso’s Figure découpée, often called flat bird or flat fish stands 7 metres high, slightly east of the centre of the park. Personally, I think it looks more like Mr Messy, but check it out and see what lies within your own unconscious at this DIY Rorschach Test.

Groot Melkhuis & Playground

This chalet-style café sits beside the water, right in the centre of the park. The food is self-service, and there’s a big playground to keep the little ones entertained and give mum and dad a chance to put their feet up.

The playground holds a special pride among generations of Amsterdammers, many of whom watch their children enjoying a playground they themselves used many years ago.

On the western edge of the park you will find a beautiful terrace surrounded by greenery. Open from 10:00-23:00, this hidden gem is the perfect place to enjoy food, coffee, or beer throughout the day and into the night. It gets a little busy during warm weather, so be sure to book ahead and secure your table in this laid-back slice of Dutch jungle. Groups of friends or families alike feel welcome here.

Vondel Theater

This outdoor theatre runs performances of music, dance, and drama during June, July, and August. Admission is free, but reservations are a good idea for popular performances. Lots of these are specially for kids. Check out their website to see what’s on.

It’s also well worth checking out the Bandstand. Like the Open Air Theatre, this 1870s bandstand features free musical performances in the summer months.
